|making room [Nyota's Quarters]

Nyota was having trouble remembering the last time she hadn't been rushing off somewhere, catching a brief moment with Spock in the hallway before each of them had another duty to attend to, a Captain to check on. When she had imagined her life on a Starship (the Enterprise, it had always been the Enterprise), she had imagined herself alone, unable to see where - what was even the right word for Spock? Boyfriend? Lover? - another person would fit in with her dreams. Yet as soon as she had made room for him, it was difficult to see her life without his constant presence, even if their schedules and responsibilities made it inconvenient. |
Somewhere between her shift and her second shift, she had found ten minutes to go and change, wishing it was long enough for a shower. The sooner this was over with, and James was back on the Bridge, the sooner she could breathe easily again and maybe be able to sit without another crisis coming to her attention. It was amazing how much could fall apart at the same time.
Clearly not enough, she decided, as Spock had rushed into her quarters to inform her that someone had taken it upon themselves to mess with his own quarters. Once may have been able to slip by as accidental, as a malfunction on the long list of things for Scotty to fix. But twice was deliberate, and while she said nothing, Nyota had her suspicions. Instead she simply listened, shook her head and tried to impart whatever comfort was possible in the snatched few minutes before he was once again out of the door.
Glancing at her chronometer, she noted that she only had four minutes before her shift started. It took one of those to adjust the temperature of her room into a compromise between what was comfortable for her and what was comfortable for Spock, another two to clear her clothes from one of her drawers, and the last minute to write him a brief note to make himself at home.
